JACKSON, MI – Construction is nearing on the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center and a pair of downtown commercial kitchens, now that the Jackson City Council has approved contracts for both projects.
The council awarded a $1.9 million contract on Tuesday, Jan. 28, to Summit Township’s R.W. Mercer for major renovations at the King Center, 1107 Adrian St.. Later in the meeting, it set aside nearly $1.4 million for the commercial kitchens and some structural repairs at 135 W. Cortland St.
Money for the King Center comes from the $2.5 million in bonds the council approved in the fall. Renovations include a larger kitchen, a building addition for more office space, a new roof, new air conditioning and heating units, an expanded weight room, a resurfaced gym floor, more natural lighting in the multi-purpose rooms, LED lighting and more storage space.
Work is expected to begin this spring, although there's no definite timeline in place for when it will finish, city spokesman Aaron Dimick said.
The kitchen money comes out of the general fund, although it was originally going to come from federal block grant funds. The change was so the city didn’t have to adhere to stricter federal standards on the project, City Manager Patrick Burtch said last fall.
The kitchens are going in the old Vermeulen’s building, which is being redeveloped by the city as a multi-purpose space – including the incubator kitchen and festival kitchen.
An incubator kitchen will provide a "low-cost, licensed, commercial kitchen space to persons desiring to create a food or natural resource business," the Jan. 28 council agenda packet says. The space will also include a marketplace to sell goods, a seating area and the festival kitchen.
The festival kitchen would be awarded annually to the winner of a food competition – which Mayor Derek Dobies envisions as an event like ArtPrize, but with food. The idea is to help jump-start a small business, officials have said.
Moore Trosper Construction Co. of Holt was awarded the contract for the kitchens, which also includes structural repairs to the basement and second floor of the building.
