A design-forward couple expanded their kitchen into the patio; now the doors can be opened to the outside on warm days.
Sara HibbertOf course Fiona and Tom Ginnett have a spectacular kitchen. They’re the couple behind London-based bespoke kitchen firm Witlof, as well as Hølte, a line of cabinet fronts and worktops in design-forward shapes and colorways, all predrilled to fit IKEA cabinetry. The Ginnetts’ design approach can be summed up in three words: function, color, and individuality. They traffic in refreshingly original color palettes and unexpected material mashups.
When it came to renovating their own kitchen in their Victorian-era, ground-floor flat in East London, Tom and Fi had their work cut out for them: It came with peeling laminate, chipped cabinet corners, and a clunky layout. They knew their new kitchen had to be colorful and function well for frequent (and messy) cooking. But with a total budget of £10,000 (about $12,800), they kept costs down in ingenious ways, hacking a graphic tile backsplash on the cheap and looking to their own line, Hølte, to source the cabinet fronts and handles. The pièce de résistance? An adorable and very sneaky cat hole built into a kitchen cupboard.
Here’s the scoop on their bright renovation.
The kitchen is a high/low mix of smart hacks and splurge-worthy materials.

The “before”: “Small, impractical, and very, very tired,” Fi says. “No working appliances, a leaky faucet, laminate-wrapped doors, and an awkward layout that had us bumping into each other constantly.”
The inspiration: Says Fi of their desired aesthetic: “The sort of kitchens you find in continental European cities, like Barcelona or Milan, and how they embrace color. We also love the clean lines and emphasis on function over form of the Modernist era.”
