A 71-year-old man punched a mother bear while his wife hit the animal with a baseball bat as they tried to run the mom and her cub from the kitchen where they were eating bread, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The couple heard noises in their kitchen around 8:30 p.m. Monday in Pine and confronted the mother bear and her cub, who were snacking on bread, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post Tuesday. The adult bear attacked the man and that’s when the couple punched and struck her.
The bears left through the same screen door they had entered, the sheriff’s office said.
The man got several scratches and cuts from the incident but wasn’t seriously injured and the woman was uninjured, according to the sheriff’s post.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials were informed about the bears and brought dogs to search the area.
“This time of year, bears are filling their bellies with food to prepare for the coming winter so you’re more likely to see them out foraging. Please be safe and check out these good tips from CPW for living with bears in your neighborhood,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
