The Kitchen trailer: Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish ditch comedy for crime - Polygon

Melissa McCarthy, Elisabeth Moss, and Tiffany Haddish come together in The Kitchen, starring as the wives of three Irish mobsters who decide to take matters into their own hands after their husbands get arrested. The title comes from the movie’s setting: New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen, 1978.

If that sounds a little like last year’s criminally overlooked Widows, know that The Kitchen is based on a DC Vertigo comic miniseries of the same name, penned by Ollie Masters, with art by Ming Doyle. The movie is the directorial debut of screenwriter Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton), who also wrote the script.

McCarthy’s character, Kathy Brennan, is a devoted mother of two who initially does not want to get caught up in the criminal life, but her skills soon surpass her fears. Tiffany Haddish’s Ruby O’Connell is seen as an outsider in Irish community, while Elisabeth Moss’ Claire Walsh is a timid housewife married to an abusive man. Domhnall Gleeson rounds out the cast as hitman Gabriel O’Malley and Claire’s love interest.

The Kitchen hits theaters on Aug. 9.
