The kitchen at Saint Anthony of Padua Church — which hosts the large-scale Italian festival every year — was temporarily closed by the health department last week, after a state official found rodent droppings on tables and shelves.
The lounge area where food is prepared at the Wilmington church, at 1812 Howland St., was temporarily closed by the Division of Public Health on May 22 because of a rodent infestation, according to the inspection report. The church was allowed to open the food area the next day.
The church's Italian Festival runs from June 9 to June 16. Church officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

During the routine inspection, the state official saw rodent droppings on top and below the prep table, next to the fryer, under the slicer, on shelves with spices, on plates near the front of the kitchen, on dry storage shelves and on the floor of the bar area, the report said.
Holes were also found in the wall and ceiling in the kitchen, the inspector wrote. Cans of marinara and dark kidney beans had dents, and a bag of potting mix was found in the dry storage area of the kitchen.
There was also no certified food protection manager at the church at the time.
To reopen, the church needed to clean and sanitize the areas where the rodent droppings were seen, seal possible entry points and hire a pest control service. The health department allowed the church's food area to reopen on May 23.
At least 22 food establishments have been ordered closed by the state since the start of 2019.
